Panthers Wrocław secured their first victory of the current Polish Football League season. Last weekend, the Wrocław side delivered a dominant performance at home, defeating Armia Poznań 35–7 and controlling the game from the opening snap.
An offensive statement
The hosts entered the matchup with a clear intent to impose their tempo. Their very first offensive drive ended in points, as running back Wiktor Halbtuch powered through the middle into the end zone to open the scoring.
Shortly after, the crowd at the Olympic Stadium witnessed another touchdown. Following a loose ball situation, tight end Eryk Grzesiak reacted quickest, scooping up the fumble and racing it into the end zone for Panthers’ second score. The early lead allowed Wrocław to dictate the pace of the game. Before halftime, Tomasz Burdziński, later named MVP, and Krystian Stępczak extended the advantage with strong rushing plays that dismantled Armia’s defense.
“It was a successful game. Offensively, we executed our goals, scoring more points than the opponent while minimizing mistakes. This win after a loss will definitely boost the team mentally. We managed to handle the absence of our QB, which was a challenge. The unexpected month-long break between games turned out to be beneficial, as we added new elements to our playbook. In the end, we passed a tough test and proved that hard work and discipline lead to wins,” said Tomasz Burdziński, wide receiver for Panthers Wrocław.
Control and rotations after the break
In the second half, Panthers’ coaching staff introduced wider rotations, giving backup players valuable minutes. While the game became more balanced, Wrocław remained in control. Both teams scored once in the second half, with Burdziński adding to his standout performance by returning a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown.
Kicker Wojciech Szymański also delivered a flawless performance, converting all six extra-point attempts and steadily increasing the home team’s lead.
“From the start, we imposed our tempo on the opponent. The offense moved the chains effectively with the running game, and the defense put us in strong field positions, allowing us to build a lead and rotate the squad. It was an exciting game with plenty of big plays and hard hits. Now we face Silesia Rebels Katowice. To win, we need to eliminate individual mistakes and unnecessary penalties,” commented Przemysław Lewszyk, defensive coordinator of Panthers Wrocław.
A defensive wall
Alongside an efficient offense, the Panthers’ defense played a key role in the victory. Veteran American Willie Stricklin led the unit, forcing errors with his presence. Strong support came from Polish players Tomasz Osmański, Alex Okrasa, and Kuba Zaguła, who capped his performance with an impressive interception.
“We prepared for this game like any other opponent, aiming to perform at the highest level. There was a brief lapse when we conceded a touchdown, but we quickly regrouped and shut them down again. Overall, it was a very good game. Despite missing Josh and later Will, we confidently beat Armia Poznań,” added Tomasz Osmański, defensive back for Panthers Wrocław.
The convincing win over Armia Poznań sets a positive tone for the rest of the season. Panthers Wrocław will return to action next weekend, hosting the undefeated Silesia Rebels Katowice. The game kicks off on Saturday, April 25 at 13:00. Tickets are available via Eventim.
