Panthers Wrocław had to accept defeat against the Vienna Vikings.

Panthers Wrocław had to acknowledge the superiority of the Vienna Vikings. In the marquee matchup of the second week of AFLE games, the Austrians triumphed at the Olympic Stadium, 42-23.

From the very kickoff, the fans gathered at the Wrocław venue witnessed tough, physical football. The “Vikings” started with a heavy blow, forcing a turnover on just the second play of the game. Despite this, the hosts opened the scoring thanks to Jakub Ciurkot's successful three-point field goal.

As the first half progressed, we saw a spectacular exchange of blows, with both sides having their moments on offense. The Panthers even managed to score a safety, picking up two points after a spectacular blocked punt. The beginning of the game was highly promising-by halftime, the visitors from Vienna held a mere nine-point lead.

In the second half, however, the Austrians shifted into a higher gear and steadily pulled away from the Polish representatives, ultimately finishing the clash with a 19-point advantage. Despite the unfavorable result, Mike Harley Jr. deserves massive praise in the hosts' colors, recording an impressive 11 catches for 181 yards and two touchdowns. Another bright spot for the Panthers was the debuting Spanish wide receiver, Juan Flores-Calderon, who also found his way into the opponent's end zone.

Vienna showed a very strong side. In today's game, they played highly disciplined and physical football. We also put on a good showing, but we made more mistakes than our opponent, and it cost us more points conceded.” - comments Patryk Guk, Panthers Wrocław linebacker.

The Wrocław squad fought bravely, but the clash with a world-class rival like the Vienna Vikings proved that victory requires perfection across all units. The coaching staff of the Wrocław team is well aware of this.

Congratulations to the staff and team of the Vienna Vikings, they played very well today. As for our team, we showed some really good things, but we lacked consistency in the second half. I look at this through the lens of my own work. I need to do a better job as a coach. Next time, our preparation will look different; we need to adjust better to the advantages that our opponents exploited today.” - comments Dave Likins, head coach of Panthers Wrocław.

The Panthers' head coach also pointed out a lack of discipline at crucial moments and missed opportunities that ultimately decided the outcome of the game.

We cannot make this many mistakes and pick up so many penalties, because at this level, the opponent converts them into points immediately. We had our chances on offense and special teams that we didn't capitalize on. We need to prepare the players better so they are more disciplined and execute their jobs the way they should.” - adds Dave Likins, head coach of Panthers Wrocław.

Despite the defeat against the Vienna Vikings, there is no head-hanging in the Panthers Wrocław camp. The team believes in its capabilities and is drawing valuable lessons for the future.

„I told the players that we can beat this team. However, to win against the Vienna Vikings, we have to play a near-perfect game because they are simply that good. I look toward the rest of the season with optimism. Right now, our focus is entirely on the game in Paris.” -  concludes Dave Likins, head coach of Panthers Wrocław.

Ahead of our representatives in the European competition is an incredibly short week for recovery. Already this coming Saturday, June 6, Panthers Wrocław will face Paris Lights on the road. In turn, the Wrocław team will play their next home game on June 14 - hosting Berlin Thunder at the Tarczyński Arena. Tickets for the clash against the team from the German capital are already available on Eventim.
