What exactly is Lacrosse?

Lacrosse is one of the oldest team sports in the world, which is over 300 years old. It comes from North America beginnings of the 14th century. The first lacrosse players were the Indians, who at first did not have strict rules of the game. They did not mark the sidelines of the field or the place where the goals were located. Moreover, the matches could last several days. Teams had up to 1000 players and it happened that the players rode horses instead of running. Lacrosse was of great symbolic importance for the Indians. It was not only a game for them, but also a part of everyday life. It was a way to resolve conflicts within the tribe, a way to keep tribe members in shape, and even a religious ceremony. It was also believed that cultivating this game would win favor with the gods. Over the years, lacrosse has undergone many changes, gaining more and more popularity. In Canada, it has become a national sport. It is extremely popular in the United States, and in the Czech Republic, the record of popularity is taken by its indoor variety - box lacrosse. Over the years, lacrosse could be seen twice in the program of the Olympic Games as an official discipline in 1904 in St. Louis and in 1908 in London. Although lacrosse is currently very different from the game played by native Indians, the basic rules remain the same. Still the main goal of the players is to place the ball with a special net stick in the opponent's goal.

In Poland, the first lacrosse team appeared in 2007. It was founded by players from Poznań who brought this sport discipline from foreign travels. Soon afterwards, in March 2008, another team was formed, this time from Wrocław. Thus, the first Polish lacrosse match in history was held between the team from Poznań and Wrocław in April 2008 and ended in a 5: 5 draw. In 2009, however, the first female lacrosse team was established under the colors of the Kosynierki Wrocław club. Despite the fact that lacrosse is still not a popular sport in Poland and it is still far from soccer, it is gaining more and more popularity every year. Currently, there are 8 men's and 5 women's teams in Poland, including the recently established Panthers Lacrosse team. Every year, national games of the Polish Lacrosse League for men and the Polish League of Lacrosse for women are organized. In addition, the Polish Lacrosse Federation appoints the best players from all over the country, who represent Poland on the international arena every year.

Lacrosse as one of the oldest American sports combines many elements of other disciplines, including basketball, hockey and even American football. Lacrosse players are characterized by speed and agility, but also the ability to use a stick. Players have a choice of several different positions on the pitch, thanks to which even physically weaker players can become the backbone of the team. What distinguishes lacrosse from other sports is its complexity and similarity to other known disciplines, and thus simply the fact that everyone can find something for themselves in this game. You don't have to be the second Lewandowski or Phelps. All you need is a little will and courage to try it, and this sport will not disappoint you. Of course, team play is very important here. After all, we are not alone on the pitch, and the result of the match is not only up to us. Some people think lacrosse is field hockey paired with rugby. The ball is round and weighs the same as a hockey puck. It happens that during a match it reaches the speed of over 180 km/h. It is a very fast sport. It is sometimes difficult for fans to spot the speeding ball. It happens that people seeing a lacrosse stick associate it with catching butterflies. Nothing could be more wrong. In the male edition, lacrosse is a very contact and brutal game, so players must wear helmets and numerous pads. In turn, in the case of a women's match, the rules introduce many restrictions. It is easier for women to get a foul for contact with another player than for men for contact with another player. Therefore, players are only required to wear jaw protectors. Do not be fooled by appearances, because despite the innocent appearance of the players and many strict rules, women's lacrosse is still a contact sport. For fans of lacrosse it is a great sport show that guarantees a thrill of excitement. There are also two varieties of the game in lacrosse, such as: field lacrosse - playing on the field, and the less popular box lacrosse - the indoor variety. Box lacrosse was invented by Canadians who wanted to use ice hockey rinks during the warm summer months of the year. Unlike field lacrosse, box lacrosse uses smaller goals during the game, the number of players on the pitch has also been limited, and the other rules have been modified to make the game as dynamic as in the original variation of lacrosse.

There is no doubt that lacrosse is a sport with great potential. In Poland, the number of people interested in this surprising and unpredictable team game is growing year by year. More new teams appear, even more excitement and healthy competition. It is a sport in which the souls of Indian warriors have been enchanted. All you need is a group of people with a heart to play and every minute spent on the pitch becomes unique. What can definitely be said about lacrosse is that you cannot pass by it indifferently.
