The Junior Polish Championship final between the Panthers Wrocław and the Warsaw Mets brought an incredible level of intensity, though it ended with a score of 6-29 in favor of the team from the capital. Despite the Panthers having to concede to their rivals, the battle on the field was fierce, showcasing the team’s spirit and determination.
Przemek Lewszyk, the defensive coordinator, highlighted the challenges faced by the team:
“The Mets were very quick to capitalize on our mistakes – missed tackles, incorrect setups, and unnecessary personal fouls. Clearly, before the first half, our minds were still in the locker room. After halftime, our defense saw a lot of improvement, but it was too late to chase the score. The team from Warsaw was definitely better today, but as coaches, we’re very proud of our team’s performance this entire season; we had one of the youngest junior rosters, yet still reached the finals. Now, we’re taking a short break before the team resumes strength and conditioning training – we have a lot of work ahead to bring the junior championship back to Wrocław next season.”
The first half belonged to the Warsaw Mets, who took advantage of Panthers’ errors and seized control. However, the second half displayed the tremendous fighting spirit of the young Panthers, who continued to push with determination until the final whistle despite the score.
Head coach Miłosz Maćków reflected on the lessons of the game:
“The final match proved doubly challenging for us. Firstly, we faced a very well-prepared opponent, and secondly, unforced errors blocked our path to the championship. We made more mistakes in this single game than we did throughout the entire season. However, losses like this teach more than victories. Despite the tough first half and an unfavorable score, we managed to come back with heads held high in the second half, which is no easy feat. We know where we went wrong and what we need to improve to reach the Finals next year and hang that gold medal around our necks.”
Despite the challenging final, the junior team walked away with new experiences, which will be the foundation for future successes.
