The name of the player who will lead the Panthers' offense in the 2025 season is likely the most anticipated news of the current transfer window. After the 2024 season concluded, the coaching staff with owners' support decided to introduce a completely new QB for the next season.
Joining the Panthers is Demarcus DJ Irons—an American quarterback weighing nearly 100 kg and standing at 1.93m tall!
Irons developed his skills and experience across various levels of collegiate football, starting at Eastern Kentucky Colonels and finishing with the Akron Zips. During his time with Akron, he amassed a total of 4,219 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, and 825 rushing yards, personally rushing in the end zone 8 times.
Born in Lawrenceville, Georgia, Irons competed also at Iowa Central Community College, where he earned JUCO All-American honors and led his team to a historic season. His transition to Akron University further solidified his reputation, where he was named to the All-MAC Third Team during the 2022 season.
"DJ is a highly determined and talented quarterback who poses a threat not only with his passing game but also with his running abilities. We are very excited to have him join our organization. He displays qualities beyond most quarterbacks we've seen in the ELF in 2024. Additionally, he is humble, eager to play, and physically and mentally tough. We will work hard together to reach the highest level of play and maintain it throughout every game of the season" commented head coach Craig Kuligowski of the Panthers in the European League of Football.
Irons' arrival at Panthers Wrocław is expected to significantly boost the team's offensive capabilities. His ability to create plays both through passing and running fits perfectly with the dynamic style of football seen in the ELF. High precision and field vision, combined with experience in high-pressure situations, will enhance both the running and passing game.
"DJ Irons caught our attention not only with his game but also with who he is off the field. In his career, he's already played at a high level against very tough opponents. Off the field, he earned the trust of his teammates as a leader, which led to naming him the team's captain. His determination in all situations and his strong desire to win perfectly align with the mentality of our organization and how we function" added Jakub Samel, responsible for scouting and player development within the Panthers' structure.
The transfer underscores the Panthers' ambitions to claim a top spot in the ELF, with Irons potentially becoming a key element in a more balanced and explosive offensive attack.
Maciej Jackowski: DJ we are very excited to welcome you to the Panthers family! What made you decide to sign to Panthers in the European League of Football?
DJ: First I did some research on the country and the football team and from there did some communicating with Coach and some of the players. From there, it made it easier for me to decide that the Panthers was the right choice!
As your years in Akron showed, you are not only a passer, but a double threat QB, making good use of your athleticism - how would you describe your playing style?
I would describe my game as a Quarterback who wants to throw the ball at all times, but can run it as well to create and extend plays.
Panthers will be your first experience in the European League of Football - were you aware of American Football in Europe before? Did you have the opportunity to see any Panthers games already?
Yes I have definitely heard about the European League of Football before I decided that I wanted to play in it! And yes I have had a chance to watch some gameplay and I am very excited to be a part of this team!
What are your expectations for your first season overseas?
My expectations will always be the same on any field I step on, which is to win games and win the championship when that day comes.
How much do you know about Poland? What are your expectations concerning the city and living overseas?
Honestly as for now I don’t know much, but one thing I do know is that it is a very beautiful sight and I can’t wait to see it in person! The Expectation I have for living in the city is to try the different foods that I’ve been hearing that are very tasty.
What can Panthers Nation and your teammates expect of you in the upcoming months and during the season?
The Panthers Nation and my teammates can expect a leader who is willing to do any and everything for his team to win on and off the field! As well as to find a way to get out in the city and have a positive impact!
Panthers Nation, I just want to say God Bless for this opportunity and thank you for the welcoming arms! Let’s bring the trophy back to Poland!
